Russia has an all-out free market and laissez-faire economy. The government doesn't interfere with business, as long as you can bribe the officials to leave you alone. Few pay taxes, because a well-placed bribe will get you off the hook.
They use rubles, but smart businessmen keep their money in US banks. My Dad worked on a computer banking center in Russia in the mid-90's. You could get a former astronaut with a PhD in computers to work for $10 an hour with no benefits (that was considered a super-high wage at the time) and less-educated people could be paid with vodka. Wealth isn't evenly distributed. Schools are shitty and unequipped, there's few social workers to keep track of the kids, no truant officers, it's difficult to get an education (unless you have money) and there's a huge population of homeless kids whose brains are damaged from vodka addiction at an early age (not to mention Fetal Alcohol Syndrome). At this point, Russia is as bad now as it was in the age of the Czars. Ads |
