What are the rules for cable TV sex shows?
Having spent some time in the business, I’d like to know what the rules are with frontal nudity and other items that can be shown and not shown on cable TV.

It seems to be perfectly okay to show a woman front and rear, but not men. No penetration, but men can have their heads firmly planted … well, you know.

You should know the answer to this, John

It's softcore porn

Softcore pornography

Softcore pornography is a form of filmic or photographic pornography or eroticism that is less sexually explicit than hardcore pornography. Softcore pornography depicts nude and semi-nude performers engaging in casual social nudity or non-graphic representations of sexual intercourse or masturbation. Soft core porn precludes explicit depictions of vaginal or anal penetration, cunnilingus, fellatio and ejaculation. Such acts are routinely obscured using various means, including draped hair or clothing, carefully positioned hands or other body parts, carefully positioned foreground elements in the scene (often plants or drapery), and contrived camera angles. Genital close-ups and erect penises are usually kept to a minimum (if shown at all), though full frontal nudity is common. Female full frontal nudity is common, while male frontal nudity is far less common.
In most cases the sexual acts depicted in softcore pornography are entirely simulated by the actors. No actual penetration occurs. Often the actors wear latex genital covers to prevent physical contact. Film directors go to great lengths to obscure such covers on screen, but often fail to completely hide them.
Occasionally, hardcore film makers will shoot alternate versions of their films for the softcore market, simply cutting in less explicit angles of the sex scenes to accommodate the "Skinemax" market. (Skinemax is slang reference to the cable TV network Cinemax based on its late night soft porn/erotica offerings).

[edit]History

After the formation of the MPAA rating system in the United States and prior to the 1980s, numerous softcore films, ranging from low to high production costs, were released to mainstream movie theatres especially drive-ins. Some, such as Emmanuelle[1] and Alice in Wonderland.[2], received positive reviews from noted critics such as Roger Ebert. Since the rise in popularity of home video in the 1980s, however, most softcore films have been restricted to home video releases or overnight timeslots on premium channels such as Cinemax and Showtime, and production values have dropped. Softcore films are carried by many mainstream video stores which often segregate them in an adults-only room.
[edit]Genres

Softcore itself has many subtypes. Some of the most common are:
The sexual awakening
A young woman has never had sex but, through various contrived means ends up being introduced to it in spectacular fashion through a series of "chance" sexual encounters with men, women, football teams, etc.
The adventures of X
An experienced sexual adventurer (almost always female) chooses to extol her "life story" in a series of loosely connected vignettes depicting her sexual conquests over men, women and football teams.
The topless "thriller"
Hard boiled private eye (cop, etc.) gets involved with a jewel heist, prison break, etc. which leads to various sexual encounters with "suspects," "victims," "partners," etc.
The topless/bikini (fill in the blank)
One or more women buy/inherit/discover a business that just needs a little something to make it profitable again. The solution is always lots of topless and/or bottomless women.
Confessions
A narrator tells the stories of various couples or individuals who engage in life changing sexual adventures. Often uses framing devices like letters, or a radio call in program with a lusty husky voiced hostess.
The weekend getaway
A group of couples arrive at their tropical (mountain, etc.) time share, villa, etc. and (quelle surprise!) everyone discovers that their previously monogamous relationships turn into a partner swapping extravaganza.
The Topless Parody
Choose a straight film genre (sci-fi, western, thriller, horror, etc.), add three or more busty, topless women and the hilarity ensues.
[edit]Examples

Examples of American softcore photography include Playboy, METart and Perfect 10. In Japan, the softcore theatrical Pink film has been a major cinematic genre since the early 1960s.
