Twitter is more like a social website like Facebook, MySpace or Friendster, it isn't something like Windows Live Messenger.

You don't need to download anything, just do stuff on their website after you sign up:

just like you do stuff on http://www.myspace.com.

Twitter is a kind of messaging protocol, where you broadcast messages (instead of them being private messages) and choose to listen to people as you wish.

You can download clients, or you can just use the twitter web page in your browser.

I sometimes use a client, and sometimes use a prism (just a single browser page dedicated to Twitter).

Just visit the link, sign up, and listen to people - tell your friends your link, and tell them to sign up and follow you - then you'll hear about what other people are doing.
