Twitter make money by selling tweets related to a particular topic to search engines it's why you can find tweets on Google, Bing and Yahoo. Another money-generating model is to show “Promoted Tweets”. Advertisers pay Twitter to show their tweets in top search results, along with their company name, likewise, there are also “Promoted Trends”

Tumblr apparently doesn't actually make money, apparently it is relies upon external investment (10s of millions) but I do know that designers can create premium themes for blogs on Tumblr and then sell them on so Tumblr may take a cut of that?! But apparently they don't even have a business plan so...

Actually tumbler doesn't work as well as Facebook and Twitter. Companies buy the user's popularity and their ability to pull the customers in. They buy the Tweets or Posts so they can advertise for them and market their products which is really an easy way to earn cash.
