How would an anarchist social group function?
How would a society function without a government? There obviously wouldnt be money. How would they deal with crime & punishment? How would they take care of their sick and injured? How would they ensure children were getting an education? Please serious answers only.

Well there's different flavors of anarchism and I happen to be a Voluntaryist or a free market anarchist. Society would most likely function very much like it does today. Today people interact through "spontaneous order" which is when people have to figure out how to get out of a sticky situation in a way that benefits everyone involved including themselves. You can compare spontaneous order to a parking lot with little to no stop signs. People have to figure out how to get out of the parking lot using their knowledge of safe driving without damaging someone else' property and without hurting anyone. It can be chaotic sometimes but most of the time people can figure it out.

In a free market anarchist society there would probably be many different currencies and not just one central currency or no currency at all. Money can take many different forms and not just paper or metals as it can also be based partly on bartering. As far as crime goes, most free market anarchist believe that if you can set the right conditions in the market place then it would not be very logical to initiate force upon someone as your reputation would be damaged and no one would want to do business with you. That's not to say that there still won't be anyone that will try to hurt or take someone's property. There would probably be private investigative companies that would handle such violent acts of aggression. Same with people that were sick or injured. There would still be hospitals and such and I honestly think that you would still have insurance companies like we do today but they wouldn't be able to do a lot of the things they do today as there would be no government and no lobbyists to send in to create some of the laws that are in place today. As far as school goes, that's up to the parents. Its nobody's business if Billy or Sally isn't going to a school.

The whole key to Voluntaryism and free market anarchism is the idea that no one or any entity(government) has the right to 'initiate' force upon anyone else. The only way force and aggression is justified is if its legitimately used for self defense. Also one of the ways you can achieve this society is by upgrading the morality of society as a whole to not tolerate the initiation of force and aggression and also rendering the state obsolete by using underground markets and trying to operate outside of govt coercion.

If you want to learn more about this, a good book to read is "The Voluntary City" as it goes into great detail how a free market anarchist society would function. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Hk-v7And48
