Can you set a Twitter account to private?
I am thinking about making an account on Twitter.com
I am a little nervous about it though.
Is it safer than myspace and facebook?

Can you set your account to private on twitter?
What are the perks and downfalls of this site?

The perk is that you can set it up with a relatively anonymous-looking nickname and make comments to folks you don't necessarily make a commitment to know. You can "follow" (that is, watch their comments on Twitter) and let them "follow" you (that is, watch YOUR comments) as you please, and change your mind at any time.

Compare this to Facebook, where folks become your "friends" and get to know you and send you longer comments and get chummy... More huggy huggy in MY opinion but that's just me, so There!

Another perk of Twitter (but then, maybe you don't have to have an account to use it) is http://search.twitter.com where you can search on any topic (kind of like, and almost as good as, GoOgle) and see the latest comments folks are making on that topic: like a REALLY up-to-date search with THE LATEST information!

Lots of other perks, learned only after being there for awhile.

Yes you can set your profile to private. After you make an account, you can go to settings and in the bottom you can check protect my updates. This way only people who follow you would read your updates.

One great thing about twitter is that is can be a one way street. You can only listen to conversations by follow interesting people and search.twitter.com. I follow people from my industry (marketing) and I am getting a free, update to date education.
