Can your Twitter get hacked just by clicking on a link?
I always accidentally click on random links that people tweet that looks like viruses but just before it opens I always manage to close it. But can your account get hacked JUST by simply clicking on links?

No, but your account CAN get 'hacked' if you either allow a rogue app to use twitter, or if you follow a link to a fake login page - these are usually indistinguishable from the real twitter login page, but are only a threat if you type your username/password in there. You should only do that if you typed "twitter.com" in the address bar yourself, not for any random link you receive (as I'm sure you know).

Also, people on Twitter tend to post cryptic-looking links for the purpose of brevity. For example, a very reputable user of Twitter, @GuardianTech, sent this tweet:
" Internet picks of the week http://bit.ly/jYx6SS "
While the link may look suspicious as it is completely garbled, this is only because they are using a link shortening service. (Note that phishing sites can also use link shortening services of course, so be wary of where you enter your password.)

Most attempts by fake links try to phish you. BUT if you click on a link that gives you a keylogger. Every sing keystroke you type gets recorded and sent out to the virus creator, who would then use that information to his advantage (login to bank accounts, other personal stuff)
