Why is Elmo the very best character in Sesame Street?

I'm writing a persuasive essay on that topic, and although we all know that Elmo is clearly the greatest character on Sesame Street, I need very credible facts to support my opinion.

Hey!

Elmo originally wasn't a huge hit, but he became one once a new puppeteer took him over in the 1970's. I also think that Elmo was an easy choice to market. Ernie and Bert are a package, Cookie Monster already had enough hype, so Oscar is the biggest downer of all time.

So really it comes down to Elmo and Big Bird, and from there I guess it's just a flip of the coin. Tickle me Elmo has a much better ring to it than Tickle me Big Bird!
