How do you send a direct message in Twitter?

I received a direct message from someone I follow, but I don't know him. It was weird, anyways, how is it that you can send a direct message? Do you have to go someones profile or how?

On http://www.twitter.com, click the little person beside the compose tweet button, in the top right of the page. It will open a drop down menu. Click direct messages.

Well, if you are on a laptop, in the Twitter account, click on the dropdown box, the one that is before the twit message icon, in the dropdown, click direct message, the top line is to choose the recipient, and the bottom is to write the message.
