I don't have a lot of free time to write articles.or a lot of money to spend on advertising.

Depnding on the type of website you have it differs. If its a website promoting your buisness, hang signs up in the place you work. If it is just like a blog of sometging you like the twitter is the way to go. Find others on twitter who would enjoy your blog and get them to advertise also. Smile

No clue what type of site you have, that can matter, the best eCommerce site is one with sufficiently high margins and visitor conversion rates to allow it to profit from paid traffic.

The majority of free traffic comes through search engines, ranking highly in search result for profitable search terms, the various SEO techniques too diverse to run through here will raise your ranking.

Besides continuously adding fresh original content, getting links from other sites is key.The easy to get links tend to have the least influence. Again you will find many of the highly for profit sites have bought links from sites with some ranking. If you plug away and get a few decent new links a week your ranking and traffic may rise a it, sorry it does tend to be proportion to the time and money you invest in the effort.

If you identify a successful competitors site perhaps that shows up in searches for a desirable term, try entering their domain name (with www. if you see one) into the Yahoo site explorer, it will report the number of pages and links to the site, this may give you a rough idea of what's required to achieve their ranking.

Here are some useful advice on how to get free traffic to your website.
The following are either free (requires some effort and time) and perhaps a little cost.
(1) Article directory (brief write up will do)
(2) Blog comments on relevant topic
(3) Forum posting on relevant topic and / or start a new thread.
(4) Video upload / sharing sites
(5) High Traffic Free Classifieds Directory (submit to a top ranking list of biggest classifieds, largest classifieds, free community classifieds or free classifieds directory)
(6) You can also find further help from (google it) Website Traffic Specialist for free tips and and customized assistance. Get help with cheap backlinks etc.

Getting traffic is a combination of a lot of things. The key to success is to create great content that visitors want to use, search engines will love and other websites will naturally link to. Of course, it's easier said than done.
