If you don't have any money, you still have a lot of options in social media.

First, search for some blogs on the same topic and start leaving comments on their posts. Try to write something unique and insightful, rather than spamming your link or just, "Nice post," and you'll have a better chance of getting your comment approved.

Join forums related to your topic and participate in the discussions there. Start following people on Twitter, get some people following you, and share your link occasionally when you write a new post. Join a Facebook group related to your topic and share it there.

Again, the goal is always be as genuine as possible. You can't rush into social situations and start dropping your links everywhere. If you want real humans to visit your blog, you have to treat them like real humans.

Good luck!

The above are good tips, but it really all depends on why you're marketing the blog. Is it to make money or just to gain some kind of recognition for a hobby. My suggestion would be to use http://wordpress.org to host your blog initially. Then switch to your own hosting account running WordPress there and download the Platinum SEO plugin. That works great for optimization with search engines and it's free.

It sounds like you need a bit of cash to get things started. I used http://short.to/alq8 to learn how to get a head start on my online blogs and businesses. They give you some real answers on how to make some quick cash fast online. Very effective, as well as explaining how to do it.

Step 1: Make sure you have plenty, high quality (means interesting for your visitors), unique (written yourself, not copied) content on your blog
Step 2: Write a few articles about your topic, and post them on article directories such as ezinearticles.com and such. This will create links towards your blog
Step 3: Write articles that answer peoples questions about the topic here on answers. Then answer their questions here in answers.
Step 4: Submit your website to directories such as dmoz.org and plenty of others
Step 5: Find other blogs about the same topic, and comment on their articles, make sure your comment adds something usefull, not just saying something like "great blog". Put a link to your blog in your comment.
Step 6: submit your blog to sites like mybloglog.com and blogcatalog.com and get a good community of friends there.
