From my experience It takes 10 times longer and ten times the expense to make money from a brand new product than it does to upgrade an existing product or service. The early adapters, as the marketing people like to call them, only occupy about 10% of the total market place.
It takes a lot of advertising effort to change peoples behaviour. Each one of us is bombarded with about 20000 ad messages a year so people are selective in what they listen to. An upgraded existing produce will get more attention because the targets mind is already "set" to lookout for an existing product. Word of mouth only seems to operate for about 9 months then your delighted customer finds someone else to brag about.
Take the humble tea bag for example. The housewife always made tea using loose tea in a tea pot. It took 20 years before she/ he accepted the tea bag but when a small improvement (draw string-drip free) was made it took off in only a few months.
Remember your ads should feature your USP (the thing you do and the competition doesn't) and normally it takes repitition (8 ads minimum) before your brand starts bringing in profit
