Well, you don't "join" as such, rather, you choose to participate.

There is no leader or membership within the group known as Anonymous. Anonymous is without rules or roles, boarders or nationality, religion or creed---and the only requirements for participation is the desire and ability to do so.

By interacting in groups and on sites where Anonymous congregates, IRC's where they chat and socializes you can be aware of the current, planned and proposed #Ops. Once you know what #Ops are up-coming you can choose which to participate in. If you want to be a participant, it is best to start by researching Anonymous and making yourself aware of the idea's behind the head lines. Do your own doxing, and know what's up before you try to jump in.

The sad fact is you had to ask this question on Y!A. This makes it appear as if you do not know where to start, and the inference is you do not spend time in the company of Hacktivists or hackers, nor do you frequent the area's of the internet where they are to be found. So, basically, I have to assume your not "in the know" or an active "hacker" who participates in illegal online activities. As such, it's really best if you find your own way, in your own time. If you can get in the right places at the right times, talk to the right people-then you probably know what your doing, and can join in #Ops whenever you wish. If you can't find the right places, people, times....Then you don't know what your doing yet, and trying to participate would only cause problems for you and everyone else involved.

Anonymous is more like a hive then a group. What I mean is, there is no leader or hierarchy; only participants. So, one (or more) person puts out an idea for a protest or target within the Anonymous community. Then others either embrace it, refine it, and act on it; or they do not. If it's an idea "most" participants support then it becomes an #Op, and a plan is put forth to accomplish it. At this point there are several branches of Anonymous, some concentrating on specific online targets or #Ops. Some specializing in things like doxing or DDoS attacks. Others are "street level protesters". These are Anons that have chosen to participate in the protests and actions taking place all over the country as part of the #OpOccupy or Occupy Movement started by Anonymous last year. They contribute as activists & protesters, "medics" or emergency medical personal at actions & protests, IT/Technical/ communications support, civilian journalists/documentariens, Shanti Sena(peace keepers), etc. So, it is not necessary to have a knowledge of "hacking" to participate in Anonymous actions.

If you want some sites to get started with, these will get you on the right track:

You can also check out some FB, Goolge, twitter accounts by searching: #AnonOps, #AnitSec, #LulzSec, Anonymous Ops, #Op cornfield, etc.
