whats the diffrence between android mobile phones and a normal mobile phone ?

please help i do not have a clue.my boyfriend wants one has anyone got one? whats the best ? are they worth buying? i have a sony erricson satio just now are the andoid phones better ? HELP

Smart phones have access to thousands of applications.
