I already use most of Yahoo's group services to get my word out, and craigslit as well, are there any other sites out there that I can attract the attention of local people for free?

Try the following:
1. http://www.elance.com
2. All professional networking sites like LinkedIn, etc
3. All social networking sites where you exist. Orkut, Facebook, etc

For 2 and 3 above, if you dont have accounts here, it might be a good idea to start now.
