The pros are that you get your product marketing material in front of the right consumer target market, the market most likely to buy your product.

The cons, you pay a lot more to do so. So you better have done your homework and be sure that the market you go after really do want your product/service and you chose the right demographics.

Hello Christopher,
You could practically write a book trying to answer that question!

A few main thoughts come to my mind:
Niche marketing if done properly lets you sell your product to a group of targeted buyers. In other words people who are actively looking for what you are selling.

I have to disagree with the other answer, it does not have to be expensive at all. Your friend can do keyword research for free and then write articles targeting the keywords and get them published online free of charge. He can also visit forums related to what he is selling and engage in posting there and advertise his site via his signature. Social marketing like MySpace and StumbleUpon(among many others) can bring traffic also. This just touches on how to get the traffic to a website.

The disadvantages are that it is time consuming. FIrst you need to know enough about the niche you are promoting or do the research on it. Then you need to have some quality content set up on your website. You need to target your keywords so the search engines will find your site. Then you need to use the above methods and others to bring traffic to your site. Of course, you have to have products to sell, either your own or find affiliate products.

But costly, no, you can do it for nothing but time, especially in the beginning. It's a learning process.
