Either the BlackBerry Storm 2 or the Motorola/Google Droid I would consider to be leading-edge advanced phones... Both are brand-new models releasing within days of each other. (Droid, November 6th).

There are substantial differences between the two devices though, their philosophy on how they do things, and for whom.
The Storm 2 does have BlackBerry in-house Facebook and MySpace applications for it... but these are simply programs with minimal functionality designed by RIM (manufacturer of the BlackBerry) because the current web browser RIM puts on all their devices is almost universally recognized as being one of the poorest on the planet, and does not support a true experience of using either social networking site like you would on a proper webpage. I should know - I own a BlackBerry.
What the BlackBerry excels at is eMail communication.
Business people love the Push-eMail capabilities of the BlackBerry, and although the underlying operating system is dated on these products, they are stable and have a multitude of customizations you can perform on them (just be prepared for a very drop-down-menu heavy interface).
The Storm 2 like all other BlackBerrys also features great security and encryption - something again, that corporate types love as it helps to guard against theft of company materials.
The Storm 2 uses a touchscreen-only interface. It also uses a unique mechanism that requires you to perform a subtle push with your fingers to "click" the virtual keys on the screen to type.
Some people love this more tactile-feeling feedback... others can't stand it.

The Droid is Motorola's newest smartphone device, and was developed in cooperation with Google - the two companies working closely to produce a phone that takes the Google search, maps, voice, Gmail experience and so on, and expands it further into the latest Android open-source OS revision 2.0 "Eclair".
The Droid has support for Facebook, and Twitter Social networking built right into it - and as for MySpace... well, it's been steadily slipping away from being popular - so it may not be supported right out of the box with a dedicated application... but I'm sure given the ridiculously better web browser and the huge applications store the Android has, I don't think that will be a problem either.
Compared to the Storm 2, the Droid has a phenomenally faster and more advanced web browser, and it is backed up by thousands of applications that make the offerings from RIM pale in comparison.
The Droid is a slider style phone, that uses a touchscreen with haptic feedback and a physical keypad / touchpad.
The Droid does not have the same level of security/encryption safeguarding that the BlackBerry does (though to be fair, no other mobile device does either) but for most consumers, I don't see this as a negative strike against the Droid...
Most people are not very concerned about being hacked, or having secret R&D plans stolen out of a corporate email.
In fairness, I'd say that unless you're a celebrity or a person working high enough in a company structure to be carrying sensitive data around with you that a rival would like to heist - I don't believe you have much to worry about.
As for Push eMail - the Droid will have Gmail's push feature, and other applications for the Android will allow for other email providers to have similar push-features (from developers like NitroDesk and Touchdown).
The Motorola Droid will be releasing shortly, but already pre-release reviews have been mostly favorable...
The physical keypad and its design being one spot where some have commented that it could be better. Then again (as always) other people liked it.

This is where you have to physically GO DOWN to your local Verizon store and try these two devices out.
Weigh the pro's and con's of each - figure out which of the features you love or hate, make a decision about which one you'd be best served by and happy with. Unfortunately there's just no substitute for that - especially where the two products differ so much in many areas.

The only thing I can offer you from my own perspective, is this:
I've had my BlackBerry for over a year now. it's been very reliable - but I am seriously considering one of those Droids, when they are released and I have read the reviews for about a month or so.
If the reviews maintain their upbeat appraisal of the Droid, I will put one through its paces.

Just not willing to sacrifice having a nice web browsing experience or some fun, useful applications in order to hold onto Push-email that arrives in 10 seconds vs 5 minutes, and bank-vault security/encryption that's probably overkill for my day to day life and business.

Good luck on finding your ideal phone!! Wink TC.
