How to create a website?

How to create a website?
How do I go about creating a website? I have read a lot about it online but I'm still not exactly sure what to do. I understand that I have to buy a domain name online, but who am I buying this off? There are hundreds of sites and if I type in a domain name that's available, they all say I can buy it off them for a certain price. Surely they can't all own every free domain name, so do they then go and buy it off the main supplier and sell it on to me?

Next, if I pay to use that domain name for a year and then it expires, aren't the website free to charge whatever they want for me to renew it each year? What if my website becomes huge, like Facebook. Doesn't it mean that they could charge me millions and I'd have to either pay up or change domains?

Once I've bought the domain, where do I actually go to create the website itself. I have a good idea of how I want the page laid out but where will it actually be stored. For example, where are sites like MoneySavingExpert.com stored? Do I create the website and then link it to the domain name?

Thanks for your help.

Yes you're right. You create your website, upload to to a hosting providers server and then link your domain name to their nameserver.

You can buy the domains from 123-reg or godaddy.

Domains aren't actually bought, they're leased from large registrar companies such as nominet who own all uk domains.

Domain prices will not be increased on renewal due to the size of your website

Slow down lol. First just try it out. The free websites. Play around with at the techy stuff. See how that goes first. When you pay for a domain name it will be created hopefully if yours is unique. When you are playing with settings and such you can save and it will be there when you comeback. Or if you publish it will be stored online on your website.
Your paragraph number 2. You are charged for things like bandwidth etc but if you become big like facebook you will have sponsors and people paying you so it won't be a problem. Once you just test it it will make sense. Make as many mistakes as you want and experiment with stuff. You can always undo and delete.

Answer to paragraph 1:

domain name is the http://www.YOURWEBSITE.com and they then save that on their server therefore once it is saved on their server they can charge you for the domain. so no they dont buy it off a supplier and then sell it to you they create the actual domain and reserve it on the internet for you.

Answer to Paragraph 2:
If for example you go to http://www.yourwebsite.com when you search for that on godaddy.com they would say this website is taken but if it is yours use our transfer service and then they can transfer it from one.com over to godaddy.com so thats how you get around paying increases. BUT what you also have to remember is what they charge you at renewal would always be their standard prices for every customer, they cant charge you 50quid or 50dollars and then charge someone else for the same webspace on 5 pounds or 5dollars. they have set prices and they dont increase depending on popularity of your website or anything they are just set standard prices for everyone.

Answer to Paragraph 3: once you have purchased your domain (for exmaple through one.com) they have an administration area on their website, you then log into there they would give you your details upon payment and you would have a section there where you upload your website files. in order to create them you either need a program like dreamweaver or frontpage, and you can create websites in them but they do require knowledge (so you may have to have tutorials on how to use them) or you can use notepad or word and type the programming code for example html or java.
but if you dont know this language you should use dreamweaver or frontpage, but depending on what you want your website to do you may still be required to have some programming knowledge.

So at the end of al you can see it is a long and hard process. If you want any more help and guidance dont hesitate to email me, hali9@live.co.uk or hali1989@ymail.com

Hope ive been of help to you.

- Buy hosting + a Domain name........... best to get them both from the same spot to make things easier. I recommend "1&1 Internet Ltd" for .uk domains and hosting to match, ARVIXE for .com / .net domains (get one for life included free with your hosting package with Arvixe)
http://www.alltheinterweb.co.uk/yald2/di...viewcat=98

The domains are held by a central registry agency........ domains ending in .uk are handled by NOMINET http://www.nominet.org.uk/

Domains are a fixed price, it's only if they because popular high trafficked websites, and the existing owner tries to sell it on through a company such as SEDO to sell it on that they become expensive.
http://www.sedo.co.uk/main.php3?language...erid=36565

- The websites are stored in massive great big buildings called a "DATA CENTER" dotted around the world.... 1&1 Internet has datacentres in Slough, Cologne & Kansas (as far as I can remember).
Each datacentre has hundreds of racks of computers, called "Servers" which store people's websites........ the 1&1 datacentre in the UK has 660 racks that can hold a maximum 30,000 webservers. http://order.1and1.co.uk/DataCenter

To build the website, you can use software such as "Netobjects Fusion" (Available in free & paid for versions) http://netobjects.com/

Or you can use webpage builders that are often in the hosting company's control panel (where you also control other bits of your account).

and/or you can use ready made PHP / CGI scripts to either make a whole site, or supplement an HTML site with a forum, etc........ though they can be a pain in the arse to install....... unless you use the "SOFTACULOUS" installer script that's ARVIXE have available in their hosting package.
