What is SMS, and what does it stand for? Is it basically like texting?
ABC World News showed an icon with the letters SMS as a way to stay connected. I'm assuming this was texting?
Also displayed was an icon of a person with waves emanating from their head. Could this perhaps be the internet? The other two were facebook and twitter, so I'm not sure if it could have meant the internet. Thanks.

SMS stands for Short messaging service,

Short Message Service (SMS) is the text communication service component of phone or mobile communication systems, using standardized communications protocols that allow the exchange of short text messages between fixed line or mobile phone devices. SMS text messaging is the most widely used data application in the world, with 2.4 billion active users, or 74% of all mobile phone subscribers. The term SMS is used as a synonym for all types of short text messaging, as well as the user activity itself, in many parts of the world.

The symbol of waves flowing over head probably refers to WiFi(wireless fidility) Wi-Fi allows the deployment of local area networks (LANs) without wires for client devices, typically reducing the costs of network deployment and expansion. These are called WLAN-(wireless local area network)
The reason for symbol of wave is this Wi-Fi system uses waves to transfer data or information.

SMS, also known as short messaging service, is the rage in Europe and parts of Asia. Gradually SMS is gaining momentum in the US as a low cost messaging solution. SMS is defined as text messages, up to 160 characters in length, sent to mobile phones. In recent months SMS has become synonymous with any text message sent to a cell phone.
