Is this shy guy possibly interested OR just friendly..?

Ok I'll try to get to the point without having too many details but by providing enough info. There's this guy (my crush) I've noticed him since last year and I've always wanted to talk to him but A) He's superrrrrrrrrr shy and B) I get all kinds of awkward when i'm around him. He has shown signs of possible interest by "coincidentally" standing by me when there was room everywhere else, and at first he would often make a point to walk by my desk nearly everyday when we had french together last year. I also caught him looking at me last year and we locked eyes for a while until he looked down.

This year:
The first day of school I inevitably bump into him nearly every hour. In one of our classes we didn't have assigned seats and somehow right when I was about to find a seat ALL of the seats are taken but the one in front of him. The next day I move over a row and he comes in after me and sits behind me (even though there were alot of seats open). I've also caught him looking at me but this time I look down and he still continues to walk behind next to or in front of me.

The iffy part:
I've tried talking to him twice but A) it resulted in awkward silence and we just stood next to each other and B) He'd give really short dead end responses. After a while my friends have decided to play match maker (without my consent lol) and asked him if he knew me. In turn he said "yea she seems like a really cool person, I follow her on twitter". And today in a class project that involved writing something nice about each classmate he wrote that "you're a really intelligent person and you're really nice!". So I don't know if he just sees me as potential friend material or what?
