What does hashtag on Facebook?

Hashtags originated on Twitter, where people can track them and use them to promote stories, trends, events, whatever. Using a hashtag would indicate that it's a related topic, so you might tag a post about the election with #Election2012 so people could search for that topic and see what everyone posted.

However, hashtags don't mean anything on facebook, because facebook doesn't work like twitter. But people still use them anyway.
