I am trying to raise the Google placement of several articles to offset a terrible posting that has been written about our non-profit. Given my very basic understanding of SEO, it would seem that posting links from "good" pages about our non-profit on major web sites (NBC, CNN, etc.) within the comments sections or even on sites like this one would raise the visibility of the good pages. Is that correct, or too simplistic? Does Google screen out such links when it scans sites? Also, is it better just to post a link, or do it as an html link, and how does mentioning the key word (name of non-profit) affect it?
PS Just to be clear, we have tons of good material about us; I am just trying to push it up to displace the blog that contains the attack on us. I hope that's clear.

I know a good deal about SEO but I am not really understanding your question. So when you search your non profit it pretty much automatically has that article come up within the first couple of results? This can kill your business. Stinks. What you need to do is probably start advertising with a good company but it will cost. I would do ad words, links, yahoo answers, and have customers that love you write reviews if they can. Just a few ideas.

This seems like it would fall more under online reputation management. I can tell you that just increasing links from good sources is not going to push that negative result down. Inbound links is just one of the factors that Google considers. It will take a lot of work. You may consider trying to create some other sites and/ or profiles for your business or keyword where the negative result is displaying. Free social sites can be leveraged, like company Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn pages. This can help to increase positive real estate and hopefully move down that negative listing. There are a lot of things you can try. I recently read a blog post about online reputation management and small businesses. You should check it out: http://www.searchperspective.com/seo/onl...sinesses/. Hope this helps.
