Digital advertising is the practice of advertising online. This can involve:

Display ads (such as banners - horizontal ads at the top of web pages and skyscrapers - vertical ads along the side of a web page)

Viral content - this is creating some compelling online content that you seed in a few places in the hope that people will find it and pass it on to their friends (hence viral). The idea is that 'word-of-mouth' endorsements are more effective than a brand simply telling consumers about their product.

Cost Per Click (CPC) is a way of paying for a particular ad. The company pays a small amount when someone clicks on their ad (a display ad, paid search ad etc)

Cost Per Aquisition (CPA). A company pays when someone buys something, registers etc after clicking on a banner, search ad etc

Paid Search (PPC - Pay Per Click) - This is using the 'Sponsored links' on normal Search results pages (check the top and right hand side of any Google,MSN,Yahoo results page) to drive traffic to a website. For more info on how this work go to (http://adwords.google.com)

Affiliate marketing - using 3rd party sites to send traffic to your website. Affiliates normally receive payment when a user clicks through from their site and makes a purchase. An example of an excellent affiliate site would be Mobile Broadband Genie (http://mobile.broadbandgenie.co.uk/)

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) - A way of pushing a website up the natural search rankings (as opposed to the 'sponsored links' so it appears at the top for searches that are relevant to the website eg. a company that sells photocopiers will want to be the first result when someone searches for 'new photocopier'. There are reams of blogs, websites etc on this subject. You can try SEOmoz, SEObook, Search Engine Watch for some good quality insight.

There are other forms of online marketing such as known as 'pre-rolls' (when you click on an embedded video it makes you watch a 30 second ad before showing you the content you want), Social Media marketing (creating groups on Facebook, Bebo, YouTube etc to reach the demographic who use those sites eg the Facebook group for the film Adulthood) and the field is continually evolving. Tomorrow there could be a way of reaching people that we'd never have expected.

To get more info on digital advertising you can read magazines like Revolution, Media Week, NMA (New Media Age), and websites like iMedia Connection.

Digital media is basically advertising online, online marketers use cpa networks or affiliate programs to find offers that need promotion, then they build websites, write articles, buy traffic, etc. in a attempt to sell the product/offer through the internet...

hence why its called digital media advertising.

Look up affiliate marketing
or check out a place like commision junction(cj.com) to learn more and possibly get started if you like
