First off, this is a two part question, so I'll tackle it in that way

The iPad is NOT an eReader, it is a tablet PC. You cannot compare the likes of Nook or Kindle to an iPad, although the newer versions are getting closer. You CAN use the iPad as an eReader, but if your sole purpose is an eReader, a Kindle or Nook are probably the way to go. Even if you're looking for a tablet, I suggest an Android one, which are usually cheaper. Actually, both the Kindle Fire and Nook Color (and newer) are both based on Android (see below)

The Kindle first sold in 2007 but only took it's current shape starting with the Kindle Fire late last year. Older Kindle's offered long battery life, eInk technology for good readability, and some had the ability to listen to music/ebooks, but nothing else. The Kindle Fire and newer offer a huge range of Android apps, including facebook, twitter, angry birds, and tons more.

The Nook has been around since 2009 and it, too, has been through many different versions. Starting with the Nook Color (early 2010), it is now able to do all that I mentioned above with the Kindle Fire.

The downside of the Nook Color (and newer) and Kindle FIre (and newer) is the battery life. While you should be able to get at least 6+ hours of read time, it's no where near the older eInk technology that literally lasted weeks.

The newest of each of the Kindle Fire and Nook Color lines are pretty similar, both can be Rooted and true Android software can be installed, making them into a full fledged tablet for very cheap. it is up to you which of these you get, but I do believe that the Kindle Fire is currently in the lead for both most units sold and highest rating.

The Kindle came first.

However if you ask me, for about the last 2 years, Nook and Kindle are pretty much on par with each other as far as offerings.

In fact, I'd say the Nook products tend to be slightly superior from a hardware perspective, for a slightly lower cost.

But in my judgment, Amazon really shines as a content provider for their Kindles compared to B&N for the Nook.
