How to get more "followers" on Twitter?

i have had twitter a while but never really bothered with it, and now i've recently started going on it more but i don't have many followers... My friend told me i should follow double the amount of people who follow me but i don't want to follow 486704281097 people, and then nobody follows me back as i'll look silly help?

the key is to find people who follow back or have less people following them that they follow. follow those people. if you're in a fandom (directioner, beleiber, brat, lovatic whatever) just search the fandom name and follow all of the small accounts. follow me @curlystyles27 :)xx

Yeah, following random people is pretty stupid and trust me, from my experience you won't get even 2% of them as followers.

You will just end up with a huge number people you will follow. This is why I prefer twitter exchange website like http://www.socialclerks.com - by using their system you will get the same number of followers as many people as you follow, which for me is pretty damn good.
