on twitter, how do you send a direct message through text?

I know how to do mostly everyhting on twitter(arn't I a smart alec?) and know how to reply through text,
but I don't know how to specify that my update to twitter through my phone is a direct message.

is it as simple as putting 'direct message first, or what?
