I've tried searching on the internet but it can get confusing with so much to choose from, and how do you know which is the best and safest way to go?

Absolutely.

Article submissions are a great way to do so. Creating a 500 word article isn't difficult, and you can submit it to a number of directories. Some directories, require original content, so it will need to be unique. Simply tell your story and provide a link to your website. Once the search engines index this article, it will remain a link to your website.

Another method is to include your website in a forum signature, as your reply to posts.

There's a huge variety of different ways to market your website. Firstly before I give you any set methods, what we often do is have a competition, each member of staff is given £10 (~$18) and the member of staff who manages to get the most visitors to the website wins a prize...it's a really good way to get you thinking really creatively.

The main methods would be:
Researching and applying search engine optimization techniques, it's fine having a great website design but if it isn't search engine friendly you're not likely to do very well.

Setting up a blog and writing articles frequently...search engines value original and frequently updated content. Don't rip off other sites content, search engines can now detect this and your website will lose value slightly.

Link to your website / blog entries from bogging websites, social media portals and social networking websites.

Avoid 'traffic exchangers', if search engines realize you're part of them you risk being blacklisted.
