@ means you're referring to a certain person. @username. # is just a topic that you can track by typing a certain word with it.

We're all new sometimes.
On twitter, "@" is used to address a particular user. If you want to mention someone particular in a tweet, use that symbol with their username. ex: @gummyworms "#" is a hashtag--practically anything can be put here; it's simply a term or phrase that is easily searchable. However, twitter often has "trending topics" that have hashtags; trending topics are popular subjects that a lot of twitter users are talking about at the moment. ex: #election2012 would be a searchable hashtag to use in a tweet if you were talking about the election--or wanted to search & see what others are saying about it. Hope that helps! |

If you are referring to someone and/or want to make sure they see your tweet, you include @ followed by their twitter account name. If you want to include a subject or topic (which might make it easier for others to find your tweet), in your tweet you include # followed by the topic. You can include more than one or mix and match. Examples:
It's cold today! #weather #winter Got a free coffee today! @starbucks #coffee |
