My boyfriend is obsessed with updates from twitter and facebook?

My boyfriend and I have been dating for 2 years and we are both 21 years old. For the past year we have been in an LDR because we go to different colleges, but we see each other every other weekend and I will be finishing up my degree in 1 year from now. He is obsessed with college football and social media, and even when we are together, he constantly checks updates from twitter and facebook on his iPhone. I've made comments/remarks about it before, but it must go right over his head. How can I tell him that it bothers me that he's so buried in his phone when he's with me without sounding like a total b*tch? I don't want to control him or anything... also at this point it is just a habit for him.
I appreciate the answers so far. However, he rarely tweets himself, he just looks at updates from mostly sports accounts and some friends.

when he goes to the bathroom or something hide it somewhere where he will never find it make sure to put it on silent too then when your weekend is over txt him the next day and say i think i remember seeing your phone the closest or something
