How does twitter work?

I don't get how twitter works-I don't have an account but I'm trying to follow Nastia Liukin on it...She just types random things...I hear it's great. I don't understand Ah someone help!

That's all it is! People tell you what they are doing, and you follow them. Or you tell people what you're doing and they follow you. That's it! That's all you can do on it! It's mind-boggling that people even go on this site.
