Generally, when they don't work together appropriately:

1. medium, too expensive, not available to the audience, e.g., Sirius satellite radio vs. free svc; cable tv vs. over-the-air tv)

2. code of language, too much jargon, inside jokes, colloquialisms, cultural differences, e.g., sportscasters using jargon, team nicknames, etc., and elegant variation in their descriptions, that can obscure meaning; US spoken language can be somewhat incomprehensible to non-native speakers, obvious "outsiders" of the local culture have less credibility with the audience)

3. channel, the channel chosen is poor, e.g., using newspapers and telephone calls to communicate with teens; using twitter and facebook to communicate with seniors; using printed text when a graphics-heavy ad might work better.

4. receiver, the receiver is not open to the communication/closed to the communicator, the channel, the message, etc., different political views, different philosophy, poor timing, e.g., trying to contact a busy mom at dinnertime, trying to tell staff about pay cuts right after announcing the company profit increased last quarter.

5. speaker, the speaker is not effective at communicating, same as #4, but also if the speaker has his or her own agenda.

I hope that helps!

At all points in the communication process you also have "noise" (factors in the environment that distort the message and its meaning). Furthermore, the receiver has to interpret the message (often erroneously). europa80080@yahoo.com
