Hi there. I'm a freelance writer as well. I would recommend oDesk, because that's where I get almost all my projects. I've been using them for about a year and have no complaints. Actually, I prefer them over other outsourcing sites because they guarentee payment for hourly work (so no more chasing clients for your money!). They also don't charge a fee to set up an account or apply for work.

Hope this helps. Best of luck to you!

Here are some tips to find freelance work:

1. First, create a portfolio of articles in your areas of expertise and interest.

2. Next, go to your local library and get e-mail IDs of local journals and newspapers. Send e-mail to the editors of newspapers / magazines, expressing interest that you want to contribute articles to their publications. Attach to the e-mail one or more of your best writing samples. If the editors like your writing, they will contact you.

3. Create a website / blog and upload your best writing samples. Promote your website.

4. Write free articles to sites like ezine.com. At the end of the article, add your bio with a link back to your site.

5. Add a link to your website in your e-mail signature.

6. Use social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to market your skills.

7. Search career portals like monster.com for freelance writing work.

Dear Aspire:

The best way to find freelance writing jobs is to market directly to companies. You're wise to stay away from bidding sites.

I speak from personal experience. I've been a freelance writer since 1993, owned an editorial staffing from 1997-2004, and now head an SEO Content Writing and Distribtion Firm (New Media Words (NewMediaWords.biz)).

Before you start marketing, following is what you need to do.

1. Pull together some web-length writing samples (5-10 is sufficient 400-500 words in length). Your samples should reflect the niche you want to get work in.

2. Get a website: A basic one is all you need. Make it clean and professional.

3. Start marketing -- TO BUSINESSES DIRECTLY. This can be via cold calling (very effective, yet scary for many); email (another excellent way to bring in leads); and/or via social media marketing outlets like Twitter (effective once you've built up some steam).

I've published an entire library of ebooks on how to start, grow or maintain a freelance writing career. You can find them all at http://InkwellEditorial.com/bizguides.htm.

Final note: Don't be afraid to charge a living rate. Many freelancers are, especially when they first start out. There's good-paying work out there; you just have to have the confidence -- and the know how -- to go after it.

Much success to you!

P.S.: Want to learn how to start a successful SEO writing business, pulling in $100-$250+/day?
