I don't want a facebook account because you don't socialise with your boss in the same way you socialise with your work colleagues, you don't socialise with your family in same way you do with your friends and you don't socialise with your acquaintances in same way you socialise with your best friends. As facebook lists everyone as a friend it essentially becomes a potentially volatile situation. Embarrassing party pics being seen by my boss and family. criticism of work being spread amongst work colleagues, etc, etc.
I also don't like how someone can freely go and write publicly on your wall and although you can delete it, you can only do so once you see it, meaning if you hadn't logged in for two days, the horrible/embarrassing/false or whatever would have been seen by many people by then.

I also don't like how you can't hide how many friends you have. Believe it or not, but people judge this!

On the other hand, i hate the idea of being a loner, i think facebook will increase my popularity, allow me to improve friendships due to being able to communicate, probably the best format for online dating as well and so much more.
Your thoughts and views?

I'm thinking along the lines of getting a facebook account, but making it very limited in its publicity, etc.

Facebook is to socialising what X Factor is to Music. It is a platform for people to brag about how hip and cool and trendy they are and it is one large popularity contest. People judge their worth by the amount of "friends" they have.

However! Facebook is a goldmine for exploitation by large companies wanting to get you to "like" their products and they tell all your friends about it. It is as much revolution as TV advertising. Except it is BETTER because unlike your TV, Facebook knows all about you and sells that data to marketing companies to target you for ads. It is genius.

Sure i use it. I hate it, but i use it. It is actually very useful to drive traffic to my websites.

So your question should really be "Do i need to join Facebook?". If you are looking to make money out of it then yes. If you are looking for something to enrich your life in a positive way, then maybe it can fill a gap. It is not a substitute for going out and actually being with real people.
