Before the US got involved, they were against war. However the people who controlled the media before and during WWI (mostly the newspapers) decided to move America into the war by using excellent, marketing, public relations, propaganda, etc. First the media Moguls told horror stories of Germans doing horrific things like killing orphans and raping women. These stories would be on the front page of most US newspapers even though there was no evidence that such horrors occurred. The effort to get the US public into a war frenzy was a triumph of perceived threat over reality. Everyone got into it and became pro war. To not favor war was the same as saying you promote killing orphans and rapping women. If you think that profiling is racist and bad today, you should have seen it during WWI, when you could be profiled as a German or pro-German. Some people would kill German Shepard, Dachshunds (yes, the Winnie dog) just to express anti German sentiments.

The Progressives were shouted down. They had no control in the Media and were not able to influence the US public. The term for this biased media is called the 'Yellow Press'

In my opinion, quoting past US President Lincoln, he said that " you can fool all the people some of the time and you can fool some people all the time but you cannot fool all the people all of the time. WWI was a moment where all the people got fooled some of the time.
