Why is this one guy popular?

I'm not the type to be judgemental or prejudice or anything like that. I'm the type that accepts everyone and tries to be the best friend I can be. There is this one guy that is very popular at this college. He has 300 followers on twitter and 1400 friends on facebook. Everytime I'm around him, he has a very dull voice and he isn't peppy or what I would call fun to be around. He isn't very talented of what I'm aware of and he looks a little nerdy. I've always had this feeling that the popular people are randomly selected to be popular instead of being popular for various attributes. I just don't get it. I'm not tooting my own horn but I play guitar and piano, I've been studying japanese for over 4 years now. I'm majoring in computer engineering. I make decent grades. I am nice to people and I accept everyone. I just don't understand what would make him popular and not me. The guy on the outside looks nice, but he is "Under-The-Radar" mean just because of stuff I've noticed he's shown towards me. It just seems like the preppy rich christians that act nice are the ones that are popular but once you hang out with them, they will exclude anybody that's not like them. It sort of pisses me off. I took the advice "Just be yourself" seriously and I do that. I'm not looking to be popular, I just want to know what makes him so special. I just don't get it.

That's exactly it, money buys popularity. Teenagers are all about who has what, who's wearing what, who drives what, how big their house is, etc. If you want your kids to be popular, you have to make a lot of money. From what I remember, I never seen a poor popular person. I'm assuming you've never been friends with popular people. They're extremely shallow and if your not attractive, and/or rich they dont really care for you.

Well it could be that he looks good, or he is rich, or he spends lots of time adding people he does not know.
