One way is that competing companies offer a variety of different products, all trying to find that winning new segment, of type of burger, or type of salad. Mcdonalds has to compete by offering similar products, and improving the quality of their products. So you're see increased variety and increased quality eg the big one, the variety of baguettes, the salads.

The other big area is cost, i've seen burger king and kfc offering budget ranges, and guess what, I just saw McDonalds advertising a budget range; chicken burger £2.99, fries 0.99 mcflurry 0.99. So cost, discounting and budget range.

Finally, the surroundings. I've seen other fast food chains updating their restaurants, and so are mcdonalds, in order to attract people in. And in europe they've introduced a new serving area that does coffees, muffins and sandwichs? To compete with the starbucks of this world. I haven't seen them use this as part of their promotions, so they could.

Maybe they will pick up on the social media bandwagon, and try and do some viral advertising. I don't recall any of the big brands trying that.

They may also continue to advertise to kids, though i'm unsure on the legality of that these days
