New to twitter....but don't understand tweets?

okay am new to twiiter read everything but still don't understand anything about tweets!!!
under your name on the top right hand side of the concer under your name it says "tweets" so I got "3 tweets" what does this mean, i now but does it mean I have tweeted three people or three people tweeted me back?
plz help thanks

Sorry to be rude but why bother ? It sounds like a load of boring rubbish to me.

That number refers to the number of tweets you have made. They are pubic tweets which show up on your profile and are not related to DM (direct messages) which you can send to people that follow you and which are 1 to 1 messages (not public in other words).
