Twitter is confusing.

To send a message you need to be following someone.
And as far as I'm aware you can't send private messages like you can on Facebook, Myspace.etc.

I think you have to be following the person.

Just type "@name" before your message.

to send someone a message, they need to be following you and you need to be following them.
if thats the case, then go to their page and under "Actions" on the right hand side, it says "Message (username)"
once you send the message, its like a personal chat that no one can see

If you want to send them a message that no one else can see, easiest way to find them is go onto your followers or following, and then on the right of their name is a drop down box and a listen of actions you can do, if it says send a message that's it, but if this doesn't show, then that person does not allow private messages, another way to send a message to them is publicly just put an @ then there username (@username) and type to them.
