This is called socialising. People feign interest in you to make you interact with them a bit.

If you respond like a grown-up person and do not think that the earth revolves around you and your petty feelings all the time, you may incite some real interest or even friendship in them. If you behave like a boohoo-kid, you will turn them off and look for other people to bother about.
