Hi there, that's a very open-ended question as it really depends what you want to achieve. There's lot of research on the web about the companies you mentioned but if you're thinking of starting your own social media type of site, then 'ning' (see link below) is a great place to start. It's free to create your network and get it running - they have lots of templates on there and you only pay when you want to go ahead with their premium services (such as using your own domain name throughout, add in your own advertising etc.).

The secret in the success of these big social sites is in their ability to be very useful to the general public across the board. Once you've got a good idea for a website you've got to work really hard to get it out to the masses and engage your users to do that on your behalf.

Going back to your question, it could cost very little if you're skilled in web programming, design and marketing - or it could cost a small fortune if you source a development company to do it on your behalf. If you are thinking of creating your own unique social networking site, research your market fully before you spend any money. Make sure there is a market.

Good luck if you're thinking of doing so.

Nothing to register with ebay, but once you start selling there are small fees, which do add up, but if you are selling items worth a large amount say over $10AU then the fees are worth paying. This is a could website to help you with signing up. http://ebayingtoearnmoney.blogspot.com/
