Did the Norwegian immigrants row away in annoyance when they saw the inhabitants of New York City?
I am a Norse-American and was a studying my heritage's history in the United States. Apparently, when my family a rowed a over here in their Viking longships to Ellis Island they were not a too flattered with the funny looking big nosed New York people, so they immediately started rowing away from Ellis Island chanting HEAVE! HO! repeatedly. Fortunately my family found their way to a Minnesota.

Perhaps your looks are not so much Norse as "Aryan"???
You know, the kind that looks good goose stepping while wearing a brown uniform? Be careful - lots of people are outing racists like you on twitter right now - posting where they go to school or where they work. You sound like just the right kind of person to include in this. Ads |

You may want to check your research your ancestors rowed to another island first. Vineland.
I think they may have been chanting Uff Da! as they rowed away from Ellis Island. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BZWtthl25U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3V2-uiyG...re=related Maybe you need to study your NORTH American historical roots. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UjMM5625...re=related You probably have distant relatives up North in Manitoba/Saskatchewan/Alberta.. Many sources of information in the various towns and churches settled by the many Scandinavian peoples some coming from the US in the 1800's when land was scarce. For the linguistically challenged Uff da translates to WTF more or less. http://lacrossetribune.com/westbytimes/n...a73e-001cc EDIT Uff da has many translations into English some more crude than others it is that expression one gives when they are just completing the last step on the wrong project. They have just been driving 500 miles to that special place and it is closed for renovations. . The response is in kind Mr. Killjoy . I guess it depends on how far back you go. I understand there are Vikings in Minneapolis and that is WAY to the WEST of Boston. A humorous question received a humorous answer not mean rude or offensive.I thank you for your TECHNICAL CORRECTION Förra gången vi använder en karta från den nederländska The Vikings raided England for 200 years ample time to learn English |

To comment on Rona LaChat, if I may correct her, "uff da" translates more like form of "uh-oh".
As for the rest of your question, I laughed a little. And just to be a total killjoy, mainstream science does not place the Vikings further south than Boston. Oh, and shouldn't they be chanting "Hiv! HÃ¥!" instead? I doubt they spoke English. |
