A business logo has a "job" to do. Namely, it should set you apart from your competition, position you and your company as a professional in your industry, and it should also "speak" to your target market. In short, your logo is not about you, it's about your customer. Granted, you should like your logo. But the most successful logos are those which identify with your target audience.

Logos are often the first impression that most people have of your business. When you have a business logo, it appears everywhere: web sites, social media, business cards, marketing materials, packaging, etc. The fact is that your logo ends up in front of your customers more often than you realize – it is the single most prominent reflection of you and your business.

Before you design your logo (or have someone else design it), I'd encourage you to consider some important factors:

1. Who are your top competitors? Your logo should be better than theirs! Shoot for more professional looking and more unique. Study your strongest competitor, not your largest.

2. Who is your target audience? The proper use of colors and shapes will appeal to some more than others. A graphic designer studies color psychology (aka, color theory) and can better tell you what will create the relationships with your audience that you are striving for. It's these relationships that will lead to your business success.

3. What is your core value message? This should be your differentiation factor (Unique Selling Proposition), but it should be incorporated into your logo so that you define your business brand in a positive and professional light.

Summary: Keep in mind that your logo is the primary visual connector for your customer and the first "point of contact" for your customer. If you design your logo correctly, you will increase your business at a much faster rate than if you cut corners and try to design a logo without first doing your "homework."
