Are graphic design and/or journalism viable careers in the current economy?
I'm actually a librarian with a Masters degree but the job market is terrible. I'm thinking about going back to school, my top two choices being graphic design and journalism. Is there still a call for graphic designers and reporters? Is there a field that is doing better than the rest?

Journalism is little better than the library market -- the internet has decimated journalism, and unless you are super web savvy (social media, SEO, blogging, etc.) there's not much work. Graphic design remains a good field if you can consistently churn out high-quality creative work. Especially if, again, you are web savvy. (Designing mobile interfaces is very hot right now, for example). Good luck!

Both graphic design and journalism are highly creative fields and you must have a natural talent for them to succeed. Regarding your question whether they are viable careers in the current economy, I am afraid you’ll have to do some research to find the answer. Start by browsing through the website of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, where you’ll find details on the job outlook for both these professions along with other useful info. I would also suggest you go through the curriculum of both the programs and see which one interests you more. You can take a look at the graphic design degree program at California College San Diego for more clarity on the coursework involved.
