How does Social Signal help search ranking and SEO?
I was reading a discussion and they claim that this gig on Fiverr help rank higher in search engine results, but how do Google track these social media activities and how do these people get shares for our links with such a short time. This is the link which the other guy was referring to.

Google is known to be moving toward using social signals, one informal test found that only referencing a site in Google's own Google+ site was sufficient to get search ranking,

Some of the social stats is jus examining backlinks found on the sites. Google employs 3rd party data providers for some of their traffic data, which may help them learn more about personal Facebook pages they can't index.

It is true that Google's Matt Cutts had said that they are using social signals as a ranking factor. Checkout this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWHGsch9U...r_embedded . Though he has said that they use faceook and twitter signals, I am not sure how much of that is true because Google bots doesn't have access to facebook since the beginning and twitter has recently shut doors as well. However, there are many other social media sites which are public and indexed by Google bots. Some examples are stumbleupon, digg and other blogging sites
