I'm very truly exceedingly horribly shy!?

I really like this guy but I'm too shy to talk to him. We have lots of things in common (religion, recreational interests, etc.) but I never see him and he doesn't have a phone. I'm afraid he'll laugh at me or something, even though my friend who goes to school with him says he is not like that. Whenever he goes on facebook, I just sit there and stare at the monitor, waiting for him to do something. Then he goes offline, and I completely deflate. I do theatre, and I'm usually very confident. How do I tap into my courage? I'm sorry for all the whining about myself, but does anyone want to help? Thank you so very much!
I just wanted to add that I know him and over a relatively long span of time we'd gotten to know each other quite well.
