What does it mean when someone liked a photo on Facebook but is now not on a friend list?

A friend on Facebook has a photo that was liked by two people. At the time of "liking" I saw these two people were on my friend's friend list. A few weeks later, when I go back to look at the photo, it says "2 people like this" but not their names. I have to click on the "2 people like this" link to see their names. These people are not on the friend list anymore either.

Does this mean they were defriended by my friend?
