Can I become friends with someone by talking to them on social networks like Facebook?

I've been going to summer school with this girl that I seem to like and I want to become with friends with her, but I just don't have enough confidence to talk to her in person, is it possible to be friends with her by talking to her on social networks, like Facebook? Would she think it's awkward?

in todays society its not really that uncommon.

Alot of people have added me on facebook and started conversations and we become friends. Of course once you start the conversation you have to talk to her in person the next time you see her cause if you dont then thats weird.
