I dont know that I would call it flirting, I do know that trawling through someone's texts is a gross invasion of their privacy

You have every right to discuss this with him!! Tell him the motions you described above, that you felt uncomfortable but left it, but if he then adds on Facebook and not say he has a girlfriend then you would feel very uncomfortable.
My advice is confront now!!!, discuss what boundaries are needed in the relationship for both of you and talk about commitment. Ask him if he can change this to show commitment and ask if you need to change anything for him that is making him feel uncomfortable ( always be fair). if he refuses to change then please walk away, it's better to walk away with your head held high, than ending up getting cheated on.
