He is giving me mixed signals help!?

I really don't get this guy I never even speak to him and a few weeks ago he punched a guy in the face because he said something nasty about me. We chat on facebook nearly every day, this might sound a bit stupid but sometimes he puts "x" and some times he doesn't. We never ever speak at school we sit on opposite ends of the classroom, from what I notice he never looks at me, my friend says he does sometimes but I never notice it. We talked last night and he kept asking me who I thought was good looking in our year I said him and some others and I asked him who He thought was a good looking girl and he said me and some others. How do I talk to him in school without looking a bit strange I can't just walk up to him, I dont even want to smile at him when I see him because he might think im a bit weird because he might not even like me? what do you think? I don't know if he is just shy because he is one of those quiet moody kind of guys. thanks
