Daily Poll: Horses & Winter?
12-07-2012, 07:52 AM
Post: #11

1.) Do you ride at all in the Winter (when it's more chilly out)? Yes
2.) Do you have a feeding and riding schedule for your horse(s)? If so, explain when you feed and ride your horses and dodging it all with school/work/etc. Yes feed before and after school and ride after school

3.) What type of feed do you feed your horse? How much do you feed him/her? Is he/she at the right weight, a little chubby or needs to put some weight on? hay/corn/grain 3pats of hay every feeding and corn/grain on occasion and my horse is the right weight

4.) How much do you work your horse in the Winter? Do you ride indoors and/outdoors? Either or, how long do you ride for and what do you do with him/her? Outdoor when there is no ice and for about and hour or until I get way to cold

5.) When turning your horse out and/or stabling him/her, do you blanket him/her just yet? If so, what type of blanket do you use (brand, thickness, etc). If you do not, why don't you just yet or even at all? No Blanket only for state will he get a small blanket but other wise no because he has never liked them.

6.) When hauling your horse (no matter how long the ride is), do you blanket your horse in the trailer? Do you have him/her wear shipping boots? Wear anything else or even nothing at all? When in the trailer he has a blanket on for the winter cause of the cold air bowling in but no shipping boots.

7.) What does your horse wear out in the pasture? (Blanket him/her? Fly masks? Boots?) **Even though it's Winter. Nothing but in the summer after I ride I will put fly spray on

1.) Do you ride at all in the Winter (when it's more chilly out)?
Of course! I couldn't let my pony get away with being her lazy under-acheiveing self just because it's cold Big Grin We don't have an indoor, so some days I don't ride but in the dead of winter when there 3 feet of snow I get on bareback and walk around the paddock on my fluffy little chubs of a pony.

2.) Do you have a feeding and riding schedule for your horse(s)? If so, explain when you feed and ride your horses and dodging it all with school/work/etc. I have been trying to work out a schedule, with school and all. I go to the barn at 3 o'clock and get all the horses in for feed. They usually get fed between 3-3:30 depending on whose there. (I wouldn't know about the morning feed, I only go in the afternoons.) I feed the horse I ride a little grain I tack up and go for my ride before it gets dark. I try to go on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. If all goes well I ride all of those days (weather permitting) and I work with the colt.

3.) What type of feed do you feed your horse? How much do you feed him/her? Is he/she at the right weight, a little chubby or needs to put some weight on?
We feed my pony (she isn't technically mine but I ride, and train her and work for my ride) Triumph by Nutrena, just a regular feed. We feed the older horses senior. The ponies all get fed half a quart, and the oldies get fed about a quart to a quart and a half. The pony I ride, is actually perfect. I took her blanket off today and I was noting how nice she looks. (it only took 8 months Tongue) On the other hand the TB I ride is normally just at the right weight or below it, which is why in the winter we up her grain to help her keep the weight on.

4.) How much do you work your horse in the Winter? Do you ride indoors and/outdoors? Either or, how long do you ride for and what do you do with him/her? If the weather stays clear and there isn't TOO much snow, then I ride a good amount. If I'm not riding I'm in the barn working with the colt. No indoor at my barn, so all outdoor rings. Winter rides are normally much shorter because of the sunlight, but on weekends I come early and go for a nice hack.

5.) When turning your horse out and/or stabling him/her, do you blanket him/her just yet? If so, what type of blanket do you use (brand, thickness, etc). If you do not, why don't you just yet or even at all? As soon as the weather goes below freezing they have there blankies on. We use Rider's International for most of our horses, lately there have been a few that are just random brands. Most of the blankets are mid-weight (so 220 grams ish). The two ponies that stay in the back of are barn (which is like a run in) they don't wear blankets because it's warmer then being out in the shed in the pasture.

6.) When hauling your horse (no matter how long the ride is), do you blanket your horse in the trailer? Do you have him/her wear shipping boots? Wear anything else or even nothing at all? Nope. For one, we never ship in the winter, and two they don't need a sheet or anything. It just makes them more sweaty and painful to get clean. My pony is completely naked in the trailer (although we should really wrap her tail when we go to a show she gets so poopy!) One of our horses does wear bell boots and shipping boots because she wears shoes, but that's about it.

7.) What does your horse wear out in the pasture? (Blanket him/her? Fly masks? Boots?) **Even though it's Winter. Blankets, and maybe halters. Some get haltered some don't. As long as one has a halter, if they all got loose then at least we could catch one and they would all come running!

1.) Do you ride at all in the Winter (when it's more chilly out)? Yes, I ride normally but give her breaks and let her cool down.

2.) Do you have a feeding and riding schedule for your horse(s)? If so, explain when you feed and ride your horses and dodging it all with school/work/etc. Feeding (I work at a barn that I only feed if I get their early enough or i'm barn sitting) They get grain and hay in the morning, hay for lunch, then grain and hay for dinner. I homeschool so school isn't really too much of a problem for me.

3.) What type of feed do you feed your horse? How much do you feed him/her? Is he/she at the right weight, a little chubby or needs to put some weight on? Most of the horses there need to have weight put on, most are rescues but the horse I ride is at the right weight. I can't think of what the grain is called at the moment.

4.) How much do you work your horse in the Winter? Do you ride indoors and/outdoors? Either or, how long do you ride for and what do you do with him/her? I ride for an hour- hour and a half in an indoor arena.

5.) When turning your horse out and/or stabling him/her, do you blanket him/her just yet? If so, what type of blanket do you use (brand, thickness, etc). If you do not, why don't you just yet or even at all? She get's blanketed just because she gets clipped (Her real owner shows her a lot) and I don't remember the brand of the blanket, Sorry :/ and yes she already gets blanketed because it's pretty cold here.

6.) When hauling your horse (no matter how long the ride is), do you blanket your horse in the trailer? Do you have him/her wear shipping boots? Wear anything else or even nothing at all? I've never seen her be put in a trailer but based on other horses that I've seen her trailer they have blankets on.

7.) What does your horse wear out in the pasture? (Blanket him/her? Fly masks? Boots?) **Even though it's Winter. She's a diva and seems to only be happy in her stall or being ridden -_- so she normally only goes out for a few hours in the summer but to make up for it she gets longed daily.

Thanks for everyone answering my poll! (:You're welcomeeeTongue
